ART | A FRENCH FILM DIRECTOR'S LOVE FOR DUFY

Tomorrow, to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of French film director Gérard Oury [1919 - 2006], his art collection will be revealed to the public at auction. As a boy, Oury was influenced greatly by his mother Marcelle who was friends with many artists of the period. The walls of his childhood apartment were lined with pictures by Villon, Gromaire, Lapicque and Dufy. As Oury's film career took off in the 1960s with comic hits like La Grande Vadrouille (Don’t Look Now–We’re Being Shot At), he began buying the sunlit paintings by the artists he had loved since childhood, including over 90 works by Raoul Dufy.

The 300 lots will be sold under the gavel of Francis Briest at the Hôtel Marcel-Dassault beginning tomorrow April 21-22nd in Paris.

ART | CUBAN ARTISTS' BOOKS & PRINTS

This week, as President Obama talks about a new day and a new beginning between U.S. and Cuban relations, I begin exploring beyond the vast musical culture of Cuba and discover an interesting exhibition at The Grolier Club of New York—America's oldest and largest society for bibliophiles and enthusiasts in graphic arts. On May 20th, the Cuban Artists' Book & Prints 1985 - 2008 show opens—highlighting contemporary book arts in Cuba. The show features the work of over thirteen artist who for twenty years, have openly expressed their experience of life in Cuba. Having survived cultural politics, difficult living conditions, and shortages in resources—including basic materials like paper—these handmade works are created with leaves, cloth, wood scraps, and other found objects. The opening coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, but celebrates the intense independence of these artists who have navigated cultural complexities while creating these works over the past two decades.

Cuban Artists Books and Prints 1985-2008
will be on public view at the Grolier Club from May 20 - August 1, 2009 with the exception of May 25 and July 4, when the Club is closed for the Memorial and Independence Day holidays. Hours Monday-Saturday, 10 AM - 5 PM. Open to the public free of charge. More information.

GREY GARDENS | GREENLIT PROMO

Grey Gardens premieres this Saturday at 8pm on HBO.
How could a ravishing young debutante and her life-of-every-party mother—relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, no less—become crazy cat ladies, occupying a dilapidated 28-room East Hampton mansion? Grey Gardens, an HBO movie inspired by the eponymous documentary shot in 1973, doesn't fully answer that question—indeed, there's a rather sizable hole in the story—but nevertheless has a fabulous time contemplating it, showcasing marvelous performances by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. ~ Variety

CHLOË SEVIGNY | SHE'S SO COOL

I love rooting for Chloë Sevigny and it's not just that we share hometowns and a love of indie films and fashion. It's because she is charismatic yet cool, and rightful of her current success on the mainstream map. And, with her HBO hit Big Love, more and more people are finally figuring out just how cool she is. As the scheming sister/wife Niki Grant in Big Love, Sevigny is brilliant, lip pouts and all. This Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee holds fashion-icon status with her love of edgy indie and vintage fashion. Her ease of style is cool too and it's what drives the fashion world to take notice. Here is a sneak peek at the incredible shots taken of Chloë for the April 2009 issue of C California Style magazine. Sevigny's unusual beauty, striking poses and off-beat character are what make these photos some of the best of the season. photos by David Cameron, styled by Samantha Traina, Fashion Editor C
